In a daring and successful operation over the weekend, Eastern Cape police cracked down on an illicit abalone operation, seizing a staggering R1.2 million worth of abalone and associated equipment. The economic protected resources (EPR) team of the Hawks' serious organized crime investigation unit, in collaboration with Dark Water Ops, the department of forestry, fisheries & the environment, and SAPS' port of entry unit, orchestrated a strategic takedown in Gqeberha.

The bust unfolded in the early hours of Saturday when EPR members received crucial information about an impending abalone offload. Acting swiftly, they arrived at the scene to discover a rubber duck boat stranded on the sand. As individuals attempted to unload the illicit cargo, they scattered upon the arrival of law enforcement.
